Shopping in Dubai
Dubai is a shopper’s haven, with shops opening at around 10am and staying open until midnight. With its multitude of shopping centers, the city of Dubai has plenty of options for shopping enthusiasts.
The majority of shopping in Dubai is done in indoor malls. There are malls scattered all over the different areas in Dubai. Most residents live within a few kilometers of at least 1 or 2 shopping malls. In addition to retail shops, most malls contain a Supermarket or Hypermarket and nearly all malls have plenty of family entertainment in the way of cinemas and/or childrens playcentres. The cornerstone malls include the Dubai Mall, Mall of Emirates, Ibn Battuta, Burjaman Centre and Mirdiff City Centre.
The Dubai Mall, the World’s Largest Shopping and Recreation Complex opened its doors for business on November 4, 2008. The Dubai Mall houses a total 1,200 shops, making it the mall with the largest number of retailers in the world. On average, some 750,000 shoppers visit the Dubai Mall every week. The Mall houses a Gold Souq, haute couture-dedicated area, Waterfront Atrium, Cinema complex with 22 screens, KidZania – a family entertainment and education centre and an Aquarium – all under the one roof!
Other good shopping in Dubai can be done at Souks or local markets in the older parts of town such as Deira, Satwa, Karama and Bur Dubai. You can pick up a number of items for a fraction of the cost you would find at the malls so make sure you bargain well. The Gold and Spice Souk and The Textile Souk are two of the most popular shopping destinations but avoid these outdoor shopping markets in the peak of summer to avoid the heat!
The Dubai Shopping Festival is an annual event usually held in January-February. The Festival is one of the largest and longest running events of its kind in the world. Each year a city-wide festival including huge sales, promotions and family entertainment draws many Dubai tourists.
