The Ruling Family

Dubai, one of the seven UAE Emirates is currently ruled by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The next in line crown prince set to ascend the throne after him is Sheikh Hamdan, his second son.

Sheikh Mohammed is also the United Arab Emirate’s Prime Minister and Vice President apart from Dubai’s absolute monarch. Sheikh Mohammed was privately tutored from the age of four in Islamic and Arabic studies after which he continued his secondary education at the English Language School of the Bell’s Educational Trust in the United Kingdom.

Sheikh Mohammed married his first wife in 1979. He married Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, the daughter of Jordan’s King Hussein in the year 2004. Sheikh Mohammed has a total of 17 children of which 7 are sons and 10 are daughters.

Sheikh Mohammed became the ruler of Dubai on 4th January 2006 after the demise of Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, his elder brother. Since the time he was crowned ruler, he has played a major role in the development of Dubai. He is in fact known to be the driving force behind the dynamic developments in this country.

Numerous projects in this Emirate overseen by him include the building of the luxurious Burj Al Arab hotel and the creation of the Palm Island Dubai and the World Dubai. He oversaw the construction of the world’s tallest free standing structure, namely the Burj Dubai (Burj Khalifa).

He is well known for his charitable acts having contributed at least $1.7 million towards the “Dubai Cares” program that helps educate poor children in under-developed countries. He is a thoroughbred horse racing enthusiast and hosts the richest horse race series in the world, the Dubai World Cup every year.

Sheikh Mohammed continues to strive for excellence in keeping with his family tradition and has contributed to a great extent to the growth of the country. His son Hamdan was named the crown prince on 1st February 2008. Hamdan is a graduate from the Sandhurst Military Academy in England and has his post graduation from the London School of Economics.

In his capacity as the Prime Minister of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed has many responsibilities. As per UAE constitution, he along with his ministers are responsible for the Federal Government’s General Policy execution both inside and outside the UAE. He is also responsible for providing directives to ministers especially on government’s general policy matters apart from supervising work coordination between the executive federal government entities and ministries.

Sheikh Mohammed as the Prime minister of UAE is also responsible for calling to convene the Cabinet. He monitors minister’s activities apart from playing an administrative role in the cabinet’s discussions in his capacity as the presiding cabinet session’s president.

In his capacity as the Vice President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed is also responsible for carrying out the responsibilities of the President of the UAE in situations where he is not available for any reason.
